Marlena Shaw was born Marlina Burgess, September 22, 1944, in New Rochelle, New York. At the age of 10 Shaw made a modestly successful appearance at the Apollo theatre but her mother ruled against the little girl going on tour with her uncle, trumpeter Jimmy Burgess. 2017-11-29 Shaw is also an active jazz composer, arranger, and transcriber, with dozens of scores to his credit. Currently, he is working as co-author (with Nick Smart of the Royal Academy of Music, London) of a biography titled Song For Someone: The Musical Life of Kenny Wheeler for Equinox Books, UK.
